Dog Days of Summer?

IMG_2841.jpeg

Chilean dogs roam the streets, unabated and apparently without fear of being rounded up by local animal control. Quiltro (keel-tro), as they’re referred to, is a mixed breed, stray dog of the streets. Tens of thousands wander throughout the country, seemingly aware that they have permission to work their territory as long as they go about their business nonchalantly… without disruption.

Many are intuitively self-domesticated beggars who have figured out how to get enough affection and support to survive. As I observed them during my time in Santiago and Valparaiso, some looked very healthy while others appeared to be ill and in need of care.

A sharp eye will notice dog houses sprinkled throughout both cities. It’s one way these nomadic canines are supported. Many locals view them as part of the community, therefore, it’s not unusual to see the dogs receive handouts or a pat on the back as people walk by them… or with them.
